Physical Education

Intent

At Coton, it is our intent to promote lifelong engagement in physical activity to all our children providing them with the skills and abilities to apply their learning to a range of different sports and activities. We intend to create healthy, active children who grow into healthy, active adults. A positive experience of sport and physical activity at a young age can build a lifetime habit of participation. We provide different vehicles through which we intend to create opportunities to become active for life. One of these opportunities is through Physical Education – School Sport and Physical Activity serving to offer other opportunities.

We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We endeavour to introduce children to a wide range of sports, provided in a safe and supportive environment, so that they can find the activity that appeals to them pursuing it beyond their time in school, thus promoting a healthier future lifestyle. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe such as being able to swim. We want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team, understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values. As a school, we share the vision that Physical Education is vital for children’s physical health as well as their mental health. We aim to make Physical Education enjoyable and accessible to all children regardless of ability and gender and offer Coton pupils access to a wide range of sporting equipment to enhance our provision. Coton is actively engaged with the South Cambridgeshire School Sports Partnership, facilitating a host of opportunities for all children to participate in physical activity and, for those ready for competitive experiences, opportunities to compete against other schools. Through Physical Education, School Sport and Physical Activities (PESSPA), we hope to improve the lives of pupils at Coton and engage them in as much physical activity as possible.
