Phonics and Early Reading

Intent

At Coton C of E (VC) Primary School, we aim to provide our children with the keys they need to flourish in Phonics and Early Reading. We value reading as a crucial life skill - fundamental to the overall development of each child, their ability to access the wider curriculum and to achieving future success. Our intent is to equip our readers with the necessary skills and knowledge they need to read fluently, read with prosidy and a deep level of understanding. They will be equipped with the tools to tackle unfamiliar vocabulary. We aim to ignite a love of reading and ensure that reading is accessible to all learners to secure success for all pupils.

Because we believe teaching every child is so important, we have a Phonics and Early Reading Leader who drives the early reading programme in our school. This person is highly skilled at teaching phonics and reading, and they monitor and support our reading team, so everyone teaches with fidelity to the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme.
