Health & Wellbeing - Mindfulness

In this unit we will be exploring how we feel in our minds and bodies when we experience various emotions.
Today, we considered relaxation techniques to help combat feelings of anxiety and how to apply them to everyday life.
The children really enjoyed learning the 'melting' technique and moving their whole bodies in response to 'stormy' and 'calm' music. We thought how the music made us feel and related this to how we all have to deal with stormy, difficult times and calm, happy times.
How we love an afternoon learning how to use meditative balances to help us achieve a calm state of mind and body.
So many successes - physical, cognitive, social and emotional!
Quite possibly Mrs Osborne's favourite PE lesson...ever!
Hedgehogs thought carefully about how different pieces of music 'looks' and 'feels' through drawing and movement.
Children listened to two contrasting pieces of music and discussed how differently each piece affected their emotions. They then expressed the emotion behind the music through drawing and movement. Blindfolded, they considered how they thought the music would look if it were on paper before removing their blindfolds and using their bodies as 'pens' and the classroom as paper to bring their drawings to life.
Teaching staff in Hedgehog Class were blown away by the children's focus, concentration, stillness and cooperation as they executed meditative balances in partners using a prop. A fantastic end to another busy week and a much needed lesson to further develop our ability to use relaxation techniques to reduce anxiety and destress.
