English - Writing
Intent
At Coton C of E (VC) Primary School, we provide our children with the keys they need to flourish in writing. It is our intent that all children leave our school being able to communicate themselves, their knowledge, their ideas and their emotions clearly and confidently in the written form. We aim for our children to read as though they are writers and write as though they are readers. Underpinned by the work of James Durran, we encourage children to prioritise the purpose and audience for their writing, ensuring they are selecting vocabulary and grammatical features to have the greatest impact on their reader.
We aim for our children to: be exposed to, and have experience of, writing for authentic purposes across a range of subjects and genres; be taught and acquire a rich vocabulary and have a secure knowledge of spelling rules and grammatical features. We believe that all pupils should be encouraged to take pride in the presentation of their writing, developing a legible, joined handwriting style. We are committed to ensuring that children understand and value the process of refining and editing their writing and are given planned opportunities – during and after the writing process – to achieve this.
