At Coton C of E Primary School, we are committed to providing our children with the keys they need to become confident, fluent and effective writers by prioritising the teaching and learning of spelling. Research confirms that spelling enhances young children's ability to read and write. Through systematic, explicit and consistent teaching of spelling, we ensure that children build a robust understanding of spelling patterns, rules and exceptions whilst developing their phonological, orthographic, morphological and etymological knowledge - The Science of Spelling.
Our intent is to develop strong spelling skills and knowledge from an early age in order to reduce cognitive overload and allow children to focus on the content and quality of their writing. We recognise that proficient spelling is essential to free up cognitive resources, allowing children to express their ideas more articulately and creatively.
