Tenacious Tagging at Tuesday’s Tag Rugby Event!

Coton’s Tag Rugby squad took to the muddy pitches of Melbourn Village College on Tuesday afternoon to compete in the South Cambridgeshire Small Schools Tag Rugby Event.

Mrs Osborne and Mrs Cousins accompanied the 13 players, all from year 6. Two of the girls, Sasha and Jessica, and three of the boys Jonah, Cosmo and Tomas, could well be considered veterans, having been part of the winning team that represented the school at last year’s event. They were strongly supported by newcomers Catalina and Sophia, Zakk, Robert, Tim, Marco, Mark and Sefi, some of which were taking to the sports field to represent Coton for the very first time.

11 teams were divided into two pools, Coton were drawn against Foxton, Haslingfield, Harston and Newton, Meldreth and Great Abington. A tough pool!

Pleasingly, there was fantastic teamwork from the squad with dynamic, skilful and at times slight messy (!) tries coming thick and fast. Combined with tenacious tagging, brilliant backing up and passionate play, Coton won the first four of their five pool matches.

So……onto match 5, the crunch match! Haslingfield stood firm, opposite Coton, both teams so far undefeated in the tournament. Despite Coton’s best efforts they couldn’t quite overturn Haslingfield who edged a 2-1 win.

This was the point at which Coton’s determination shone through. Despite finishing runners up in their pool, bitter disappointment clearly evident, the squad picked themselves up and went on to win the third place play off against Harston and Newton by a single try, 4 tries to 3.

Smiles returned to the players’ faces as the results were announced and Coton were awarded the ‘Spirit of the Games Award’ by the sports leaders and competition organisers. Mrs Osborne and Mrs Cousins were immensely proud of the squad as this new award recognises the team that has shown good sportsmanship and best demonstrated the sporting values of respect, determination, honesty, passion, self-belief and teamwork, values that Coton school have always promoted.

Well Done Coton Tag Rugby players – a squad to be proud of!
