Varmints Writing - January 2023

As part of our writing lessons this term, we have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the surreal and haunting text, Varmints, by Helen Ward (illustrated by Marc Craste). With its thought-provoking message, mesmerising creatures and unsettling theme, it is fair to say that we have all been captivated by the text and video stimulus!

After analysing the text in depth, we spent time using ambitious figurative language, exciting expanded noun phrases and powerful adverbs/vocabulary to describe the ominous shift in the setting. Through the use of drama, we spent time delving into the thoughts and feelings of the main character, Marty, as he watched his once serene home be taken from him.
