Unleash Your Creative Monster
On Friday 26th November, Kestrel Class were fortunate enough to take part in a virtual writing workshop led by author, Andy Jones, and his illustrator, Olaf Falafel. During the session, Andy shared tips and ideas (in an incredibly humorous and engaging way) to inspire the children to 'build' their writing muscles in order to unleash their 'Creative Monster'. An extract from Andy's book can be found below.
Andy made reference to a great story being like a great cake in that the icing, the chocolate buttons and sprinkles all exist to make a cake more interesting, more tempting and more delicious. But, the cake is what is needed to hold them all together! He went on to explain that a story should have three main ingredients - Goals, Problems/Obstacles and Struggles.
In addition to the above, Andy placed great emphasis on creating realistic characters by assigning them a selection of 'character traits'. He reinforced the importance of only selecting a few character traits to allow the reader to relate and get to know the character well, without becoming too confused. He demonstrated how these character traits can then be subtly referred to throughout the development of story writing.
All in all, the session was excellent and has given Kestrel Class an effective understanding of how to structure and unleash their 'Creative Monster'. We look forward to applying Andy's ideas to our own narrative writing soon.
