African Drumming - November 2022
As part of our history topic, 'Maafa', we spent time working with music specialist, Ms Body, to explore, appreciate and understand some traditional African music. We learned how to correctly position our hands on the drum in order to play the lowest sound (the bass), the middle register (the tone) and the highest pitch (the slap) with increasing accuracy, fluency, control and expression. After listening to and appreciating different pieces of traditional African music, we were taught the three djembe patterns and the three djundjun (bass drum) patterns to make a multi-layered performance of Djabba Djembe, using an aural signal to change between sections.
