Year 6 SATs

End of the day

Could parents please supervise their children at the end of the day. There have been a few incidents of children running to the top of the field and trying to climb over the fences at the back. This is damaging the fences and is a safety issue.

If you are collecting your child from pre-school, before the end of the day, please be aware there may be classes or small groups working in the playground. We would be grateful if parents can keep their child with them and ensure children don’t ride scooters/bikes near where classes are working.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Year 6 SATs 13 – 16 May
All Year 6 children will be taking part in national curriculum tests this week. It is particularly important that children come into school rested and in good time for staff to settle children down before tests commence. Y6 children may come into school from 8.30am on the days of the tests for breakfast if they wish.

Class 2 Notices

Next Friday (17th May) will be the final spelling test before half term. The children have worked really hard this half term and are being given a week’s rest from spelling tests before half term.

Please ensure your child arrives at school at 8.50am every day, but especially the week beginning 20.5.13 as the Year 2 children will be completing some assessments.

We will be making ‘Moving Pictures’ in our DT lessons in the week beginning 20.5.13. If you have anything at home that has a moving mechanism such as a lever or slider, eg a book with a pop-up/moving part on the page, or a greetings card with something moving on, please bring them into school.

We will be creating our own moving pictures based around our topic Night-time. If you would like to bring in anything to use from home to add to your night-time picture you may do so.

School dress code

As the warm weather arrives and summer clothes come out can we remind you that some clothing such as flip flops, open toed sandals and crocs are not suitable as outdoor shoes for school. Children find this difficult at playtime when running around and using the trim trail. We would also ask that shoulders should be covered to avoid sunburn and small cut off shorts be saved for weekend wear. Jewellery is also discouraged as necklaces can get caught and torn while children are running around. Your co-operation is appreciated.

Parents in classrooms (mornings)

Can we remind you it is really helpful to your child and greatly appreciated by staff when parents leave classes promptly in the mornings – allowing registration to commence by 9am. Recently some classes have been unable to start the register until 9.20 which has an impact on the length of the lesson and therefore on your child’s learning. As it is the summer term it would be helpful to encourage your child to come into the classroom independently. Your co-operation is appreciated.

End of the day

Could parents please supervise their children at the end of the day. There have been a few incidents of children running to the top of the field and trying to climb over the fences at the back. This is damaging the fences and is a safety issue.

The dates of the dates KS2 performance will be 9 & 10 July at 7pm. We will send out a letter closer to the time for you to book tickets. As last year tickets will cost £1.

Home Club News
Tuesdays and Wednesdays are very popular days at Home Club, and are now at maximum capacity. If you wish to use either of these days and didn’t book them before the start of this term, please check with Marilyn the day before, to see if there has been a cancellation.

Late comers
An increasing number of children are being picked up late. Please note that the club’s closing time is 5.30 everyday, unless you have pre-booked and pre-paid an extension till 6. Picking up late is very discourteous to the staff, please try to be on time. The club has a late pick-up fee of £5 per 15 minutes to cover additional staff cost, payable on pick-up, which we will now need to enforce to stop the drain on the club’s resources. If you don’t pay this on pick-up it will be added to your next bill. However, the staff would much prefer parents to be on time than to collect extra fees. Thank you for your cooperation.

Curriculum letters

Please find attached letters from each class outlining what your child/children will be learning this term.

KS2 Production

The dates of the dates KS2 performance will be 9 & 10 July at 7pm. We will send out a letter closer to the time for you to book tickets. As last year tickets will cost £1.

Class 1 Visit

To Wimpole will be on Wednesday 15 May. Please see attached letter for more details.

Class 2 Notices

In Numeracy next week, we will be learning about capacity as well as revisiting weight and length. Please could you bring into school any empty containers that held liquid, so we can use them in some of our Numeracy lessons. Thank you.

Class 3 Visit

To West Stow will be on Wednesday 15 May. Please see attached letter for more details.

School Meals

If your child has a school meal, please pay at the start of each half term.

The meals are £2 per day. This half term is £56 and next half term is £72.

Free Taster Session – If parents would like to come and sample a selection of the food served at lunchtime, there is an opportunity for you to do so on Monday 29 April at 3pm.

Dear Parents and Carers

Professor Chris Bishop

As part of our activities for Science Week we were delighted to have local scientist, Professor Chris Bishop, visiting the school on Tuesday. Children and staff enjoyed some incredible science demonstrations. These included watching powder being blown at high speed through a tube and then ignited, giving the impression of fire breathed from a dragon, and acid and alkali slowly being mixed causing a beaker of liquid to gradually change from one colour of the rainbow to the next! The demonstrations were both exciting and intriguing and left us all inspired.

Videos of Chris performing science demonstrations including some of the ones we watched can be found by logging on to www.richannel.org and typing in ‘explosive science’ .

Easter Service

Our Easter Service is on Tuesday 26 March at 10am at the church. Parents are welcome to come but it may be standing room only.

Class 1

Hopefully you will have received a letter from your child as a special surprise this week. We would be very grateful if you could also send them a short letter to open at school. The school address is:

Coton C of E Primary School

Whitwell Way

Yr 5 Careers Convention

This event will be on Tuesday 26 March at St John’s College. This has been organised by Network 11, the group of schools which feed to CVC, along with CVC itself. Please see attached letter for more details. Permission slips need to signed and returned to school on Monday 25.

Big Pedal

Well done to all the children who came to school on their scooters and bikes for the Big pedal Challenge. A big thank you also goes to all supporters. Coton School came 18th nationally!! Regionally Coton was 3rd. Class 3 were the champions within the school. Well done Class 3!

There was a combined 933 journeys by bike and scooter, with supports. 39% was the average number of children cycling to school daily.

Yr 6 SATs information evening

Thank you to all the parents who came to the evening. We hope you found it informative and it was a good opportunity to ask any questions you had and to look at the new Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPaG) test.

Parking and Turning

May I remind all parents and carers not to use the staff car park. This has happened during drop off and pick up and when some parents are picking up toddlers from pre-school.

Traffic to and from school always causes problems for schools. We try our best to ensure safety for children and minimise disruption to other road users and pedestrians. I ask parents not to turn in the school drive way as this is dangerous for children walking to school and suggest that you drive past the school and find a suitable safe place to turn. Some parents who walk to school and Pre School with small children are concerned that many cars are turning in St Peters Road and making it difficult for them to cross safely. Please be aware of this. You may find it safer to go to the top of Silverdale Avenue where there is a “turning circle” or parking at the church and walking.

Dear Parents and Carers,

Class 2 Trip to Sea Life Centre

Class 2 had a super day out on Monday when they visited Hunstanton Sea Life Centre. The children had a touch-pool talk, where they were able to touch starfish and crabs. After this, the children were able to explore the sea life centre and look around at all of the sea creatures. The staff at the centre commented on how well behaved and polite the children from Coton School were.

Many thanks to the parents that came along to support and who offered to help out on the day.

Class 2 have been writing their explanation texts all about a sea creature of their choice this week, along making a silk painting of their creature too. Fantastic learning Class 2!

Welcome

We are very lucky to welcome Mr Ellis to the school. He will be teaching alongside Ms Hayesmore in class 4 next term, and will be visiting on Thursday and Friday next week.

NetBall

A squad of nine children (Kitty, Bertie, Elliot, Eve, Miranda, Annabel, Raphael, Madeleine and Ella), all from class four, gave up lots of their lunch playtimes to practice for a netball tournament at Comberton Village College that took place yesterday evening.

They were all very excited, and their hard work paid off! They were the only team at the tournament to win all of the matches they played. They all contributed lots, especially Bertie who scored 5 goals in a row in one half of a match and won the “Golden Hand” for best scorer in the tournament, closely followed by Raphael who scored 4 goals throughout the matches! And special thanks to Annabel the nutritionist for providing the team with food, (cheesy twists.)

Now we are through to the upper A final! Well done Coton Netball Team!!!!

Dear Parents and Carers,

Notices for Class 2:

A reminder that we will be going on our trip to the Sea Life Centre on Monday! Please ensure your child is at school at 8.50am, ready for a prompt registration and setting off for our journey.

If your child suffers from travel sickness please give them their travel sickness tablets before school. Please let me know as well. All children need a packed lunch on Monday as we are out of school all day.

We will be returning to school by 3.30pm ready for pick-up at the end of the day.

We won’t be having a Big Write session next week, due to our day trip out, but the children will be writing their explanation text all about the sea creature of their choice. It would be fantastic if the children could do some extra research on their sea creature to help support their writing further next week.

Class 1

Next week we are planning to make musical instruments. Please could each child bring in a container with a lid (no glass please). Any donations of noisy items would be very much appreciated e.g. rice, pasta, seeds (no nuts please), pebbles etc. Thank you

Bikes and Scooters

A polite reminder to parents and children not to ride their bikes/scooters inside the school grounds. There have been some near misses recently. Thank you

Each class will have a lesson in the bus. If any parents, carers or governors would like to visit the bus they can do so on Wednesday 20th Marchfrom 9am – 9.20 or 3pm – 3.20

Please see attached letter for more details.

Red Nose Day

Friday 15 March is Red Nose Day. The school council have chosen the following ideas to raise funds for Red Nose day: 1. Coming to school with wacky hair 2. Dressing a toy in red 3. Wearing something red which includes red noses. School council have suggested a donation of a £1.

Tag Rugby

Report prepared by Ella, Olivia and Kitty

‘On Tuesday 26 February a group of Class 4 children, Ella, Kitty, Olivia, Bertie, Harry, Joseph, Raphael, Thomas B-G and Samuel all went to a tag rugby tournament in Swavesey.

We had done five PE lessons on tag rugby and only covered some of the rules. It was the first time we had worked together as a team. We learnt more tactics by watching the teams while we were not playing. We won 2 matched 7-2 and 5-2. The matches that we lost were only by 1 point each time!! We came fourth in the small schools competitions and received certificates. We think we did very well even though it was very cold!’

Ms Hayesmore and Mrs Osborne were very proud of the children. They worked well as a team and showed good sportsmanship.
